Hairdresser, Committee Chair Escape Death in Aburaso Accident

Chaos unfolded in Aburaso on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, when a speeding Daewoo Matiz vehicle lost control while descending a hill and crashed into two electric poles, causing a widespread power outage in the community.

The vehicle, with registration number AS 4938-16, was reportedly moving at top speed around 12:30 p.m. when the driver failed to navigate the slope. Eyewitnesses say the car veered dangerously toward a roadside hairdressing container but narrowly missed it, slamming into two utility poles instead.

Inside the container were two women — the Unit Committee Chairperson of the Aburaso Electoral Area, Madam Rita Tieku, and a local hairdresser — both of whom narrowly escaped harm.

“It was a miracle,” Madam Tieku said in an interview. “The car was heading straight for us. If it hadn’t changed direction, we could have been killed.”

According to her, the driver and three other occupants immediately fled the scene on foot, abandoning the vehicle with its ignition keys still inside. She quickly contacted personnel from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), who arrived promptly to assess the damage and begin the process of restoring power to affected households.

Police officers from the Denkyemuoso station were also called in and towed the vehicle from the scene. ECG officials later accompanied them to the station to officially report the incident and file a complaint over the destruction of the poles.

The following day, the owner of the vehicle — a nurse — visited the scene to apologize to Madam Tieku and the hairdresser. Investigations indicate that the driver was a mason working on a project for the nurse. Although the nurse was aware that the mason had taken the vehicle, it is unclear whether he had full permission to drive it.

Madam Tieku has since called on ECG to urgently repair the broken poles and restore power to the affected parts of the community. Residents, meanwhile, continue to express gratitude that no lives were lost in what could have been a deadly crash.
