GNASSM Appeals for Extension of DVLA’s 2-Week Excavator Registration Ultimatum

The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) is calling for an extension of the two-week ultimatum issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) for the registration of excavators.
While acknowledging the importance of the directive, GNASSM emphasized that the timeline is too short for full compliance by its members. Speaking on behalf of the Ashanti District, GNASSM Secretary Mr. Adu Gyamfi expressed the association’s full support for the DVLA’s initiative, noting its potential to enhance revenue collection and curb illegal mining, which has led to environmental degradation.
Mr. Gyamfi pointed out that enforcement of the registration policy has historically been lax, which has led to non-compliance among many equipment owners. He noted that the extension would give members enough time to gather necessary documentation, especially given the complexities in the purchase and ownership agreements of some excavators.
He also commended the DVLA for its proactive approach and continued stakeholder engagement to address challenges faced by machine owners. He urged all excavator owners, particularly GNASSM members, to comply with the directive and warned that the association would be limited in its ability to assist members who fail to act within the given period.
