Anti-Galamsey Taskforce Arrests 13 for Illegal Mining at Wassa Gyapa

A joint taskforce comprising the Western Regional Police Command and the Wassa Amenfi East Police Command, led by Superintendent Wallie, has arrested 13 individuals engaged in illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, at Wassa Gyapa in the Amenfi East Municipality.

During the operation, which took place on Monday, 19th May 2025, the taskforce destroyed over 120 “changfan” machines used in illegal mining. Additionally, six motorbikes believed to have been used by the suspects were confiscated.

 

The arrested individuals have been identified as Owusu Asare, 36; Atta Kwame, 18; Apiyanga Emmanuel, 28; Kojo Montanakito, 23; Maxwell Owusu, 19; Obofo Vincent, 22; Soogal Fataw, 19; Nana Ampadu, 58; Stephen Tetteh, 18; Yaw Dalame, 23; Samuel Amoah, 20; Kwame Oppong, 19; and Francis Oduom, 18.

The suspects are scheduled to be arraigned before the Tarkwa Circuit Court on Tuesday, 20th May 2025.

A press conference by the police command is expected later today to provide more details on the operation and the broader efforts to clamp down on illegal mining in the region.
