Minority Caucus in Parliament donate GH¢200,000 to Adum Fire victims

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has donated GH¢200,000 to support the victims of the Kumasi Adum Blue Light Market fire outbreak in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti region.

The devastating fire that broke out on March 21, 2025, caused widespread destruction. Many shops were reduced to ashes, resulting in billions of cedis, raising national concern and prompted action from Parliament.

All the 88 Parliamentarians representing the main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) toured the affected areas and commiserate with the affected victims.

During the presentation in Kumasi today, Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin expressed sympathy for the traders and acknowledged their suffering.

He urged the government to assist the affected traders, as it had done for others in similar situations when disaster struck.

Hon Afenyo suggested that the government consider using funds from the Contingency Fund to aid the traders.

“I take this opportunity to make a humble appeal to the government of Ghana that, looking at the effects of the situation we find here . Obviously, the traders are suffering, and we know the commitment government made in some areas. We urge the government to take funds from the Contingency Fund immediately and without delay and come to the rescue of the suffering traders of Adum,” he stressed.

According to the Minority Leader, the government can take a uear to rebuild the market if indeed it is committed to constructing it.

The Minority Leader who is also the Member of Parliament for Effutu constituency in the Central Region, also urged those managing donations to uphold transparency and ensure that aid is delivered directly to the victims.

He reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the redevelopment of the Adum market to provide a safer and more secure trading environment.

In response to the donation, Mr Joseph Bobie Ansah, the Chairman of the traders, expressed their gratitude to the Minority Caucus in Parliament for their support.
