Former Cameroon Coach appointed Black Stars technical advisor

AFCON-winning coach, Winfried Anton Schafer has been appointed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as the Technical Advisor for the Black Stars.

The German, who once led Cameroon to an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) glory in 2002, has rich experience in coaching.

The German tactician will be tasked on advising the senior national team the Black Stars on game strategies, player management and development, and optimizing team performance.

One of his role is to serve as the Director of Football, where he will collaborate with the GFA’s Technical Directorate to carry out long-term strategic plans and oversee youth development initiatives.

The 75-year old Schafer, has over four decades of coaching experience, and has coached national teams such as Cameroon, Thailand, and Jamaica, as well as European clubs like Borussia Monchengladbach, Karlsruher SC, and VfB Stuttgart.

He also has international experience that extends to the Middle East, where he managed clubs including Al Ain, Al-Ahli Dubai, and Al-Khor.

Others include FC Baniyas, Esteghlal F.C., and FC Baku.

Schafer’s immediate task is to ensure the Black Stars qualifies for the 2026 to held in the United States of America, Mexico and Canada.
