Galamsey Pit Leaves One Dead, 3 In A Critical Condition

ONE Person has been confirmed dead in a galamsey pit at an illegal mining site at Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality of the Ashanti.

Three persons have also been critically injured and are receiving treatment at the Nkawie Government Hospital whiles the body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue for autopsy and collection.

The deceased identified as Osei Kwabena, 23 from Offinso was said to have been working in the pot when it caved on him, resulting in his instant death at Nkonteng where the incident occurred.

Three others who sustained multiple injuries were rescued by some good persons at the location of the incident.

The Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Koyim Mahama Iddrisu, who confirmed the unfortinate news to swiftnews3.com, indicated that a distress call placed on his phone from the galamsey site reported about the incident to him on Monday, December 16 2024 at about 9pm.

According to him the residents managed to save the three, leaving the Osei Kwabena who was already dead when found.

The NADMO office lamented on the illegal mining menace in area close to the forest and appeal to the security agencies to beef up security in the area.

“Some illegal miners have taken siege in the community and are mining close to a fores. We have chased them out several times but return whenever we leave the site,” he lamented.

Koyim Mahama expressed worry o er the situation and urged residents to be on guard and apprehend any suspected individuals in the area.

“We are not going to spare anyone caught doing galamsey in these surrounding communities. Anyone caught would not be considered and would be made to face the full rigours of the law,” the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality NADMO Director warned.
